Single Line Portrait Collage

In this lesson students will explore observational drawing techniques in creating a collage of abstract portraits. Students will practice single line blind drawings multiple times and use these drawings to create a collage.

Lesson 1

Students look at a variety of different styles of portraits (Picasso, Van Gough, Modigliani, etc). Discuss the differences in each style and how art can be abstract or realistic.

tudents will create their own abstract portrait collage. To begin students will practice drawing themselves using a mirror or photo. Students will focus on only using a single line (not taking your pen off the paper) and without looking at the page (only looking at the mirror or photo while drawing)

Students create multiple drawings (at least 6). Once complete students will use coloured pencils to colour in some of the small closed in shapes of their portraits. They will then cut out their faces. Students will then layer their faces on a coloured piece of paper trying multiple compositions before pasting them down.
