Pencil Shading Techniques

In this lesson students explore pencil shading techniques using a grey lead. Students will practice shading a sphere by pressure blending, hatching, scribbling and stippling. Students create 4 shaded spheres using these different techniques.

Lesson 1

Students explore the element of tone. Discuss how different tones and textures can be achieved through shading techniques. Demonstrate to students four different shading techniques such as pressure blending, scribbling, hatching and stippling.

Students create 4 spheres on A4 paper and practice these techniques. Students should create 4 drawings of a sphere exploring those 4 shading techniques. Students should consider the light source when creating their drawing and may use a ball or round object as a reference for their drawing.

Reflection:

Students consider the different techniques they used for shading and analyse an artist's work who uses these similar shading techniques.

Extensions:

Students can use a chosen shading technique and create a drawing of a still life set up.
