Mondrian Inspired Print

In this lesson students will create a Mondrian style print. Students begin by applying marker on to printing foam and stamping it on a piece of paper. Students experiment with creating horizontal and vertical lines which intersect. Students will then use primary coloured pencils to colour in some of the square areas they have created.

Lesson 1

Students look at and discuss the work of Mondrian. Explain the term minimalist and discuss what primary colours are.

Students will create their own Mondrian style work through print making. Students will cut a small piece of printing foam. They will colour in the edge of the foam with black marker, mist the edge with water and then press the foam on to a piece of paper. Students should repeat this process until their page is full of horizontal and vertical lines which intercept and create small squares and rectangles.

Once complete students will use primary coloured pencils to colour in some of the squares and rectangles.

Reflection:

Students compare their work to a work by Mondrian. What are the similarities and differences in aesthetics and in the materials that have been used.

Extension:

Students could create a large scale collaborative work using the same techniques.
