Kandinsky Inspired Print

In this lesson students will learn about abstract art and the work of Kandinsky. Students will create sponge prints on a piece of paper using watercolours. Students will then draw over their prints emulating some of the lines and shapes which Kandinsky uses in his compositions.

Lesson 1

Students analyse the work of Kandinsky. Discuss the kinds of lines, shapes and colours which he uses. Discuss what abstract art is and what the students believe Kandinsky’s works represent.

Students will create their own work inspired by the artist. They will begin by creating different coloured sponge prints on a piece of paper. They will use watercolours to colour their sponges and then press them on to the paper. They will create multiple prints like this in different colours on the same sheet of paper.

Once they have finished printing, students will then draw over their work with black markers. They can use rulers or other materials to help them create these shapes and lines.

Reflection:

Students compare and contrast their work to the work of Kandinsky. Analyse how the use of materials are similar/ different and the overall composition.

Extension:

Students can create a larger composition on A1 paper with larger shapes to print such as foam sheets cut into shapes, instead of sponges.
