Gel Plate Leaf Texture Collage

In this lesson students will create multiple gel plate prints using leaves and acrylic paint. Students will use these prints and cut them into smaller pieces to use in a collage. Students will explore how their artwork can be presented and try a variety of different compositions for their collage.

Lesson 1

Students explore the shapes and textures in leaves. Students collect a variety of different leaves and explore how they can be used on a gel plate to create a print. Students select up to 4 colours to use in their print. They will then roll out the paint on a gel plate and places the leaves on the plate before placing a piece of paper on top to pull a print.

Students will then remove the leaves from their plate and take another print with the leftover paint.

Students should continue this process to create multiple prints exploring different leaves and different combinations of colours.

Lesson 2

Students use their printed papers form the previous lesson to create a collage. Students cut out their prints into smaller pieces and arrange them on another piece of paper as the base of their work. Students find a composition they are happy with and paste down their pieces to complete their work.

Reflection:

Students describe the kinds of textures which they have created and discuss the different lines and shapes which different leaves create.

Extension:

Students can use the leftover scrap papers and share them between other students to create a collaborative collage.
